Run by two Canadian expats, the Leaky Palapa is more like a supper club than a restaurant. There is a set menu with different themes on different nights. Depending on when you go, you could be chomping down on Huitlacoche Ravioli or freshly prepared sushi. They serve one cocktail with the dinner and after that you are welcome to take your own drinks.

Maya’s Grill- Tierra Maya- Xcalak

Fresh, simple and good food served alongside tasty cocktails and cold beers, Maya’s Grill is a laid-back but elegant place to eat. The restaurant has a palapa-style roof and wooden furniture, all in keeping with the feel of Xcalak. A great bet for good quality local food.

Tropicante- Mahahual

A beach club popular with visitors arriving on the cruise ships, Tropicante offers great service, cold bears and all the classic beachfront dishes. Grab a sun lounger, maybe indulge in a massage and enjoy the fresh shrimp ceviche and limey guacamole. A great place to spend the whole day!

Fernando’s 100% Agave- Mahahual

Fernando knows his tequila, so if you chose to visit be prepared to enjoy a tequila tasting or a freshly prepared margarita. Food includes huge steak burritos, seafood pasta, fish tacos and nachos among other delicious offerings. Eating at Fernando’s is a fun and interesting experience.

Zayzu- Chetumal

A really great option for hearty Mexican breakfasts packed full of flavor. The restaurant has a calm ambience and a lovely garden that is like a tranquil oasis in the city. There is a large selection of fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies on offer and the breakfasts will definitely set you up for the day.

Marisqueria Mi Viejo- Chetumal

Within walking distance of the Museum of Maya Culture, Marisqueria Mi Viejo serves fresh and delicious fish and seafood dishes. The ceviche is the favorite here and there is often a live show during lunch and dinner. Put this place on your ‘to visit’ list.
